Recent Advances in Physical Optics Research

Huang Zhixun

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 18-29

Abstract:

This paper focuses on a series of theoretical and experimental studies of the physical optics, such as the Goos-Hänchen shift, the FTIR phenomena, the negative refraction index, the superluminal experiments of THz rays, and the measurement of photon rest mass. It indicates that the evanescent waves phenomena are becoming more important in physical optics research recently. For example, superluminal propagation is a result of the evanescent waves, i. e. the evanescent fields. The possibility of a finite photon rest mass remains one of the most important issues in physical optics, as it has a bearing on a series of fundamental questions. A discussion on the present situation in this area is given. Finally, the history and advances of optical frequency standard and optical frequency measurements are given in the article.

A New Method for Strengthening Wrought Superalloys: micro-alloying with Phosphorus and Boron

Hu Zhuangqi,Sun Wenru,Song Hongwei

Strategic Study of CAE 2005, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 17-26

Abstract:

The strengthening effect of phosphorus and boron on wrought superalloys is reviewed and discussed. The addition of phosphorus and boron can prolong the rupture life of some wrought superalloys over 3 times, and lowers the constant creep rate by an order of magnitude. By micro-alloying with phosphorus and boron, alloys with extended rupture life are developed, the service temperature of IN718 alloy is enhanced, and the alloys which can be used for a long time at 700℃ with higher combined properties can be developed.

Data-Driven Microstructure and Microhardness Design in Additive Manufacturing Using a Self-Organizing Map Article

Zhengtao Gan, Hengyang Li, Sarah J. Wolff, Jennifer L. Bennett, Gregory Hyatt, Gregory J. Wagner, Jian Cao, Wing Kam Liu

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 730-735 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.03.014

Abstract:

To design microstructure and microhardness in the additive manufacturing (AM) of nickel (Ni)-based superalloys, the present work develops a novel data-driven approach that combines physics-based models, experimental measurements, and a data-mining method. The simulation is based on a computational thermal-fluid dynamics (CtFD) model, which can obtain thermal behavior, solidification parameters such as cooling rate, and the dilution of solidified clad. Based on the computed thermal information, dendrite arm spacing and microhardness are estimated using well-tested mechanistic models. Experimental microstructure and microhardness are determined and compared with the simulated values for validation. To visualize processstructureproperties (PSP) linkages, the simulation and experimental datasets are input to a data-mining model—a self-organizing map (SOM). The design windows of the process parameters under multiple objectives can be obtained from the visualized maps. The proposed approaches can be utilized in AM and other data-intensive processes. Data-driven linkages between process, structure, and properties have the potential to benefit online process monitoring control in order to derive an ideal microstructure and mechanical properties.
